Recurve with a longbow handle?
« on: February 25, 2009, 01:09:00 PM »
I want to make a recurve bow form one that will use a longbow grip similar to a binghams longbow grip, (like the short Widow recurve). What size would the handle be for the bow? I'm looking to make a 1 1/2" wide 54-56" recurve. Would I be able to use the typical longbow form but recurve the ends?  How could I figure out my lam thickness for 45# draw weight? Can anyone help?

I have made LB handle recurve patterned off mid 1950's Bear Kodiak. I used the bow for form pattern and measured limb thickness to approximate lam thickness formula. Also used the limb profile from the original bow. Hope this helps.

If this is the first lam bow your building, I would say use the binghams plans for your desired recurve length and weight. You can profile the bow handle anyway you want without messing up limb performance. They are very helpful if you call'em and tell them what your trying to do.

If you have some experience, Shauns got a good idea!

Thanks guys, Yhis is not my first lam bow but didn't want to go through the expence of trial and error. I do have binghams plans but just ordered a plan from old master crafters. I'll see if between the two I can get what I want.

Ill post you some pics of my "long curve". I came up with the pattern kinda like Shaun. Hate to admit it but my building pattern goes something like, Trial, error, error, error, success(now how did I get this??)   :knothead:  Keep notes as you go, they become invaluable, especially when you start experimenting.

This was my first attempt at bow building. Osage and black walnut. My bows are MUCH better now, Im proud to say. Started building recurves and switched to longbows. Something about'em I can't get enough of!!!
