2 New board bows
« on: March 07, 2009, 01:37:00 PM »
Made a couple board bows with some scraps...they actually turned out pretty good.

First one is a 41" Santos Mahogony kids bow...used the paper bag backing method.  It is 15 lbs at 14 inches.  I had some slim strips of black and white ebony i used for the overlays and an arrow made form an old broken one.

The second ia a hickory/purpleheart longbow, 68": long...around 50 Lbs @ 28"..these two pieces of hickory& purpleheart extra i had were 1 inch wide so i glued them up with URac 185...

I tried several different tips but ended up with these Padauk overlays.  I initially tried cutting a deer antler in half to creat wedges and tied them on....that wasnt all that great...then i tried gluing some antler overlays on with superglue...that didnt take, so i moved to the Paduak.  I tried a floppy rest on this one like some of those I saw on here and a suede handle.

You did a nice job on both bows. How about a full draw pic of each.

Thanks guys...sorry i dont have those full draw pics, ...the 41" Santos Mahogony was a gift to 3 1/2 year old Joe Sharpe for being the man of the house when his dad was in Iraq....and the purpleheart bow I think will be added to the collection.  I will try to get a full draw pic of that pupleheart bow when my wife gets back..

bjansen, here is something to think about with regard to the arrow. For each inch you remove from the arrows length, below 28", you have increased the spine weight of that arrow by 5#.(50# spined arrow cut to 20"=90# spined arrow) These stiff arrows can be frustrating to the small shooter. You can make good arrows for kids with 1/4" hardware store dowels that will be more consistent and more enjoyable to the little ones to shoot.

Ah, good point...Yes indeed, I am sure that arrow is way, way overspined.  I will have to make some arrows with the dowel like you said..what could i improvise for points...maybe 22 cal. shells.

22cal might fit. 3Rivers sells 1/4" field points but you may not want your youngun shooting sharp points. Pencil erasers, the kind you add after you wore the others out, will work too.

Shoots pretty good. Slow but stable...and less handshock compared to some of my others (maybe due to those thin tips)
