Hide Glue?
« on: April 04, 2009, 08:21:00 PM »
I have a buddy that wants to sinew back a bow tomorrow. He has the sinew but no hide glue. I have about 1/4 of a sandwich bag which I don't think will be enough. I remeber reading that you could use plain gellatin from the grocery store.
Anybody have experience with this?
Thanks,
Brent

Yes. Knox unflavored gelatin. It is hide glue!

Brent, I get as much out of this site as anyone. I love all aspects of archery and like to share with others that feel the same. I got where I am with the help of others!

It does make you feel good doesn't it. My buddy has never sinewed a bow before. I can't wait to show him how. I learned how to make a selfbow over the computer with instructions and pictures from Gene Winter in Iowa. He's a very patient man.
Thanks again.

Wyo - PatB is absolutely right.  Knox or whatever unflavored gelatin.  It is cheap and works great.

I have done a few sinewed bows right in the kitchen and my wife didn't skin me alive.  I pre-soaked the sinew in warm/hot water but others may have better advice.

enjoy the journey
