IPE/Boo Glueup

Ok, so I put my IPE/Boo together at 11:30PM last night.  I glued up with TBIII and wrapped with inner tubes and clamps.  I also put in a form for 2.5" of reflex on the tips.  

So how long should I wait to take off the clamps and out of the form. And how long before I should start tillering?

I've not had much luck glueing ipe with wood glues.  I hope you have better luck!

I'd give it at least a day in the clamps and another to dry, so you might as well just leave it in the clamps.

I hope so too jeremy.  I cleaned off the IPE with acetone about 10-12 times.  I still had some brown coloring coming off after all that.  But hopefully I got out all the oil.

I have glued up a few ipe bows...never did use acetone to clean them up.  I hit them with sandpaper to get a fresh surface, squirted on the old TB3 and away I went. I have not had any separation yet.  You should be good to go in 24 hours.  I wait longer but thats just cuz I tend to procrastinate.

I've made a few boo backed and hickory backed ipe bows, glued up with TBIII and all survived and shoot very well.
  Because of the moisture in the glue I tend to wait a few days before stressing the stave. The ipe probably won't absorb too much moisture but the boo will. If you unclamp it, you will want to mess with it so don't unclamp it for a few days. d;^)

Too late pat.  Didn't get your message in time. I was like a kid on Christmas day getting thru the door wondering how she turned out.

Good news is I didn't do much but clean off the tape and sand off excess glue.  

And also took the rine off the boo.

It didn't keep much reflex.  Only about 1" on each tip.  I had the tips supported with 2.75" of blocks.  Figured she would have kept at least 1.75".

Oh well, she looks pretty good.  Can't see any glue lines.

She may increase in reflex as you reduce the ipe. I have heard of that happening.

On my last one it increased reflex by an inch when I started thinning thr Ipe. That's the only one so far that has done that.

All my abcked bow come off the form with 1 1/4" of reflex.  Once I remove the bulk of the spare belly wood, they go to 2 1/4".

This happens very consistantly from my R/D form.

I learned one thing with this.  I should have floor tillered much more before putting in the form.

Oh yeah no doubt....always floor tiller or reduce you stave to hold maximum reflex

Plus by floor tillering to a good even bend first your finished bow will also have good even bend to the limbs.

I floor tillered some.  Basically to even out the limbs.  I had both bending 4-5".  But I was scared to go to much because I didn't know how much stiffer the backing would cause.

Now I know significant.

The backing and glue joint together add quite a bit of extra weight. More that you would imagine.

Well, you guys were right.  I did some floor tillering today and my reflex went from .75" to 2".  Guess that tells me next IPE/Boo need to floor tiller the core much more.
