Trapping IPE/Boo
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:19:00 AM »
I slightly trapped my limbs on my IPE/Boo build last night.  Reasons I did it was bascially I had some mini gaps between teh IPE/Boo glue up with TBIII.  And I heard its the thing to do.  Also, I have scraping and scraping trying to floor tiller this bow getting the limbs bending some and worried my IPE is going to be real thin when the bow is finished tillered.

But my question is, is Trapping nesassary for IPE and boo?  I thinned the boo from 1/8" in the middle to 1/16" at the tips.

Can Boo overpower IPE?  My design is 1.25" wide handle area going to 1.2" fades, and 1.2" 4" above the fades and then tapering to 3/8" tips.

Ipe is very strong in compression and boo is very strong in tension so trapping is not necessary with this combo.   Boo CAN overpower ipe!  You can make a straight taper from the handle to the tips with this combo and get your weight.

Pat...that's just what I did....I went from 1.25" at the handle and did a straight taper to the 3/8" tips....I'm going to glue the boo on tomorrow...I wonder if I should reflex the tips during glue-up....will the boo/IPE combo take a set....didn't mean to jump your thread bigcountry....just thought this was a good topic to ask these questions...Steve

Well, I trapped them about 1/8"  Figured it can't hurt.  And the gaps between the boo and IPE are gone.

When you say make a straight taper from your handle to the tips, are you talking belly taper?

I tapered both my boo and my core.  I now need to get more bend near the handle on my long string.

I was actually talking about the width...but I also tapered from 3/4" thick at the handle to about 3/8" thick at the tips....for a starting point.....now I'm going to glue the bamboo on....Steve

I was talking about the width.  You should also taper the thickness so you will get a nice even bend when you glue it up in reflex. 2" to 3" is plenty of glued in backset. It will come out of the form with a little less than you put in and may loose a bit more after tillering but you could end up with at least 1" of backset when done.
