using bait for coyotes?
« on: February 07, 2008, 05:03:00 PM »
has anyone used that fake gut pile stuff from cabelas on predators, thinking about trying it, also, would it be a good idea to call from a tree stand, or would they be able to pinpoint the sound easier and see me?

Let me share a tried and true method, for me anyways.  Purchase a quart or so of chicken, beef, or pork livers. Put them in an onion bag (Mesh type) and let them sit in the sun for a few hours.  Tie a short piece of rope on to the bag and drag it through the woods to a spot where you have set up a tree stand or ground blind.  Pull the drag through the woods at mid-day or early afternoon and be situated in your stand or blind an hour or two before dark, with the bag laying on the ground 15 or 20 yards away.  Check with your local regs to make sure it's legal in your area.  Sounds crazy, but it works to bring them in better than a call because they have their attention downward to the trail, and not on the horizon... less likely for them to make you when you draw the bow.

I always just throw out the carcass for any deer I've butchered.

Check with the local farmers and see if anyone has disposed of any carcasses lately. This is a food source they usually won't leave until it is gone!!
Calling in these areas is very productive.

i think ian wants some input on a fake pile o guts, honestly i dont think it would work to well it wouldnt keep them there, but maybe if you put a couple crow decoys it might get some other birds around making some noise wich generaly means food for scavengers.
