The pattern maker router bit??
« on: May 15, 2009, 05:03:00 PM »
I've seen references here to using a pattern makers bit in a router to cut forms.

Any suggestions on a good bit?  Also, are they long enough to do a 1.5" form in one pass?  1.75?  2 inch?

I use one about like this, mine I bought locally(Home Depot)and it is a Freud for the same money.

 http://grizzly.com/products/1-2-Pattern-Cutting-Straight-Bit-1-4-Shank/C1306Z

I run the bit on the template, then let the router down and make another pass using the just cut surface for the template. It should be identical to the template.

Alrighty, finally I see the princial of operation here!

One Last dumb question, Kenny.  Is there enough shank length to continue to drop the cutter far enough to cut a 2" form?

Probably not on the grizzly bit, would only leave about a 1/4" in the router. Could be bad if it came out of the collet and became a projectile!!  :scared:

On Dano's link, which I need to make a fave!!, if you have a 1/4" collet, call them and see the full length of #5504,and if you have a 1/2" collet,# 7807 should be the cat's meow!!
