what about this osage log can a bow be made from it

Hello guys, I have had this log for about a year now and it's time to do some thing with it.. What do you guys think can there be a bow made from it.. I am sure there can be if so what kind would you guys make from it.. Sorry for the mess in the shop... I been so busy I never get time to clean it up.. That what I am doing tomorrow.. Thanks for the help guys,

 

I started to work on it but I stops as I didnt know if I should keep going... LOL
 

 

This is all most right where the arrow rest and the riser would be... This should be fun..

Cody, Get the log quartered out and look it over. I'm sure there are 4 bows in that stick. Question is, can you find them? d;^)  The rings look good and the crooks can be tamed with a bit of heat.
   When you get them quartered, remove the bark and sapwood to the first good heartwood ring(don't forget to seal the back and ends). Then look them over and figure out where they want to go...and enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the help Pat, this is the first bow I well be making like his.... I have all ways had good logs.. But I need a change here and there... it keeps us all on your toes when we bower's get a log like this....

Cody, unless you are really experienced in working with crooked, knotty wood, then I have a hard time thinking you can get even one bow out of that log.  Or at least one full lentgth bow.  I think your best bet would be to cut it in half before you split it any more, then split it, see what you have, and you should be able to glue up a few good staves with the M or N or W splice in the handle.  Did you cut that log yourself?  It's always great when the you have a "history" with the wood you are working with.  Good luck and let us know how it works out!

Chisler I cut that osage tree down in the winter of 2007 on a snow day from school.... It's been in my shop since... So this is the first time I been working with it.....

I've never done a splice, but I've watched it done. I'm getting fairly confident with heat. Between the two I really think I would cook that thing into submission before getting into all that splicing stuff. You're gonna have to heat it no matter either way. JMO

     Ya don't learn if ya don't try. Nobody has ever done it the first time. Quarter it and try with the first one, ya got three more chances. Think of the fun in trying and the pride in succeding. I've never failed if I gave it a good try and learned from the experiece. Good luck and have fun. Remember a heat gun or steam work wonders.
