Need Advice
« on: June 12, 2009, 11:18:00 AM »
Guys I need your help.
I have been flingin arrows for a few years. Bought my first recurve in the mid-60s.Since then bows have come and gone and I am very happy with the ones that I am shooting now.
Two of my passions are archery and wood working.I would like to combine the 2 into bow making.I have a pretty decent shop set up in my garage.I don't believe there are alot of tools that I would have to buy. What I lack is knowledge. I can't think of a better place to start than here.
What would you consider to be required reading? Where would you purchase supplies?
Years ago I had the opportunity to build a laminated bow in shop class. Our instructer had a form and a hot box. I passed as these bows had a history of de-laminating. I have kicked myself many times for not building one. Even if it did fail I am sure alot could have been learned.
In the Oct./Nov. 2005 issue of Trad Bowhunter there is an article called Building Your First Fiberglass Longbow. If you are familiar with the article is this a good method?
Thanks in advance for any help you can pass my way.
Take care,
                   Ed  :help:

Sounds like you want to build a laminate bow ?
I only have built self bows so far, so i'm not much help for you.

But the Traditional bowyer bibles are great reads. At least pick up volume 1.

Have fun !
It's a great day to be alive !!

Binghams sells videos showing the whole process from building the form and heat box and shaping/tillering the bow. Also carry all the materials for building.
Ask questions here and other sites. Lots of excellent bowyers willing to share their knowledge.

 WARNING!!
It is a very addictive hobby............

Binghams Projects is a very  good place to start. They have everything you need to start. Once you wet your feet this is a good place for more ideas.

Thanks so far guys.
Actually I am also interested in self bows.
I recently saw a post for a osage selfbow that was made by a member here. It was for sale and was beautiful. That what got this whole thing started again.
Kenny, I'm headed for your site.

Ed your going to have a great time learning about building and building bows.  I combined archery with my woodworking hobby last year and cannot tell you how great it has been.  PV has a good disclaimer...this stuff is addictive!

I have a Bingham DVD if you want to watch it a couple times and send it back to me, that would be fine by me. It is a good tutorial.  Then you can buy your supplies right from Kennym!  PM me if you want me to send it to you.

I would start with a straight form and if you dont want to get into the hose method right away, check out how Apex does his glue ups with old bike tire tubes...he has a great build along below.

Thanks for the offer on the DVD but I think this is something that I may want to refer back to often.I aint the quickest study on earth. I'll order one this afternoon.
Looked at the build along by Apex. Beautiful work.I like the tube idea.Got a feeling I am going to need that build along.
Looks like Kennym has the goods.
Thanks again guys.
Got to go to bingham and get my dvd.
