Newbie needs help with first bow please.
« on: February 04, 2007, 10:02:00 PM »
Well guys I'm a father of seven so money is tight, Feb. 1st was my birthday the party was today. I got a $30.00 gift certificate from 3rivers to help with supplies. As you know that isn't near enough, HA! HA! I have a couple questions about things if you don't mind helping with?
1st: I can't afford the oven sold by Bingham do you really need it? If not what glue should I get?
2nd: For the lams I was thinking of buying a pieace of lumber from a hardwood store by my home. I was thinking of getting one 2" x 6" x 36"
Will this work? I was going to cut the wood with a band saw and sand it down to the width I need. What type of wood would you recommend I get? I have the riser wood already 2"x2"x18" pieace of zebra wood. I'm looking to get a 50lbs bow so how many lams at what thickness will I need.
3rd: I was going to order the glass from 3 rivers with my gift certificate. I want two 1 1/2x72" at .050 correct?
I have ordered and constructed the mold with the blue print for a longbow from 3rivers. I also have a step by step article from Traditional Bowhunter mag. that I'm using to help plus I was reading some build alongs here on tradgang and saw one gentleman using a tire tube as clamps. I really like that idea. My whole goal is to feed my passion and build a bow but try not let it affect my household budget. Things are a little tight right now as we just had our last son. Any input on your part to help me keep cost down would be wonderful. Thx
Bill

If 3 Rvers can tell you what lams to use to get to a 50lb weight on their mold let me know and I will grind you some actionboo lams. You cant get accurate enough out of a bandsaw.

Using the chart I have from Bingham it tells me I need the thickness around .300 does that include the glass you think. Thx for the offer. I would be grateful, how much money do you need for the lams?

Thx for the help Crooked Stic. Still wondering about the hot box and glue to use. Also should I get .040 or .050 thickness on the glass?  I was wanting to get clear glass.

i try to give you a hand on this.
.40 glass is enough for 50 lbs.
go with smooth-on,its the best you can get,
and proven by thousands of bowyers.
for the hotbox...
I wouldnt do it without one.epoxy needs heat while it hardens.you simply need some kind of box and some light bulbs, thats it.flip an old (or brand new,if you like)cabinet 90 degrees put 3 or 4 100 watt lamps inside and heat the damm thing.
no cabinet?
2 chairs,2 sticks from one chair to the other and through some blankets over them, again some heatsource and it gets warm.
any simple idea like that will work.
take care not to burn down the house tho,so while the thing is running, watch it.
if you still need help,ask.
we are here to help.

Wyatt's Daddy:

Are you building a "lefty" or a "righty"?
