New to bow making. I have completed one board bow and one hickory stave bow that are working fine. Have broke three so far. Two weeks ago I took down a 3 inch Hickory in the woods behind my house. Unlike the previous 8 inch hickory that I split into staves the bark did not come freely off this little tree. While removing bark I tore some of the sapwood below a knot. This knot would be located at about the bottom of my grip. I am planning to make a Creek D bow in the 55lb range. Right now the stave has been reduced to a beginning floor tiller and is in the house drying on a reflex cull. I have had advice from one local bowyer and am soliciting opinions. What I would like to do is smooth out the tear. Fill with a hide glue sawdust mixture and after sanding do a sinew wrap around the bow and over the patch. Thoughts?
