Run ups in osage lumber?
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:55:00 PM »
I bought some osage lumber. It was cut in 1992 and has gotten very dark. Three of the boards have some severe run ups. I was going to back with hickory and induce some reflex-deflex at glue up. Am I headed for some heart break, wasted time and material. I know hickory will work with run up but how about osage. Thanks, Don

It depends on how severe. Can you post pics?

If your hickory backing is good I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I will try to post pictures later today, but the boards are really dark, so I'm not sure how the pictures will turn out. Don

I have had problems with boo backed osage and severe grain issues, primarily where the grain "swirled" around a knot.

Sand or scrape them and they won't be dark anymore.
Take a kid hunting!

O.K., I've been around woodworking all my life, and never heard of the term "run ups". Please explain.
