Heat tape vs. Heat Box
« on: August 21, 2009, 03:13:00 PM »
Hello,

I am very new to bow building. I have helped with 3 laminated bows and hope to start my own soon.

I have seen electrical heat tape used to cure the epoxy while sitting in form. Is this an equal technique for curing epoxy compared to the hot box?

Any thoughts on heat tape vs. hot box are appreciated.

Thanks

I made a hot box(as per Bingham's)when I build a glass bow. It has served me well with self bows and backed wood bows as well as for storing wood in a dry environment.  Heat tape only has one application.

I have used the heat tapes for about 4yrs. now.
I think they are the only way to go if you plan to build alot of bows. You can leave your form on the bench and cure a bow in a couple hours,vs. 5-6hrs. No more lifting a heavy form into a heat box. It is not for everyone, cost is around $300 vs. $25-50 for a heat box which you will need also.(for drying wood and overlays and such). Any specific questions please ask, I will help if I can.
