66" osage selfbow
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:39:00 PM »
Just finished up a 66" Osage selfbow..a stave I got from Mikes Osage at Mojam and the stave I worked on while I was out there.

It came out at 51# @ 28"..I used a tru-oil finish, floppy rest and a suede grip.  Cocobolo and deer antler for the tip overlays.

I used a 4" handle and 1.5" fades...and I am thinking I should have made the fades longer...maybe 2.5" or 3" because the riser section just feels a bit too short...other than that I think it turned out pretty good.  I did heat reflex it just after I floor tillered it.

She looks great, the handle does look a little small for your hand, oh well huh, next one will be better. Tiller looks pretty good, even with that background.

Turned out nice Brad. She got a name yet?

I got wide paws and usually go with 2" fades, but I've been shrinking them down to around 1-3/4 lately. Seems to feel good to me.

She looks good to me. I prefer a shorter handle area to get the limbs bending right up to the handle.

Good looking osage Brad.  Especially like the tips.

Did you ever try to work that wood like I got from you?

Thanks guys...The one one the bench is a snakey stave I got from Mr. Marlow at Mojam. I have antler overlays on it and am ready to start tillering that one...it should be interesting.  I used a bit longer fades on that one.

Very nice! I have always used the 1 1/2" fades. Like Pat said... always trying to use all the limb I can.
