self nocks on a bbo
« on: October 01, 2009, 01:40:00 AM »
Okay.  Here are some pics of my tips.  I think I'm going to go ahead and add some Dall sheep overlays.  I'm a little concerned about how far through the bamboo the grooves go.

I wouldn't cut thru the bamboo at all, just cut grooves in the sides. You risk breaking a tip any time you cut thru the back.

Thanks for the reply.  I bought this blank second hand and the previous owner already filed through the bamboo.  Not all the way, but about 3/4 through.  I'll just use some dall sheep horn I have for reinforcing the tips.

depends on what string you use. I did this on some warbows, but they had +18strand b-50. I wouldn't even dare with FF.

I'm using a 16 strand B50.

I'd add new string grooves below those but not across the back unless you have overlays.

I added some dall sheep overlays.  Not the prettiest job, but I'll shape them a little more and they should polish up nice.

They look good, but the string angle could be less abrupt. Closer to 45 degrees or less would be good. When your at brace you should be able to see how the string bends in the groove, if that makes sense to you.

Yes, it makes sense.  Right now, the string bends a little at brace.  I'll file them down a bit.

Any where from 30 to 45, it depends on the length of the bow really.

looper - That Dall sheep looks like it'd be pretty stuff!

Hey Dano! - Got Emily fixed up with some vintage Bear Razorheads tonight and had her shooting that litle selfbow out to 15 yards. After a little instruction, she was drilling the spot on the target. They got there quick with that skinny string. Turkeys beware!
