Surprise Bow Build-a-Long
« on: October 17, 2009, 12:43:00 PM »
While Dave's bow is hanging in the shop with yet another coat of finish drying.

I decided to go ahead and start the Surprise Bow

The person I am building this bow for has absolutely no idea he is going the the recipient of a Kanga Custom "Yarra"

The riser is going to be Ash and Tiger Stripe Pecan.

As you can see I have the 2 pieces of wood spot glued together, the riser shape marked and the xed out portion is going to be the Pecan.

The limbs will be Tiger Strip Pecan edge grain for the back and Ash for the belly.

The limb butt overlays are going to be Tiger Stripe Pecan with the stripe running across the limb.

Once the spot glue has dried on the riser section I have to change out the bandsaw blade from the 3/4" blade to a 1/4" blade to cut the curve.

More to come

Ok Changed out the band saw blade, done the cutting and had to do a little sanding to get the 2 pieces to fit snug.

Here it is all glued up just before poping it into the heat box for the next 4 hours.

The riser is now all glued up excess ground off and in rough shape.

Hopefully I can make a start on the limbs tomorrow.

Thanks guys I have to put this bow on hold for a bit, The one I finished over the weekend exploded yesterday when I was test shooting it.

Never had a riser break mid handle before, there was no creaking, no crack just boom on the 5th shot, still got a headache from where the limb smacked me.

Dadgone russ, glad to hear you ok.  I thought pecan was one of the most strong woods you could get.  Maybe put this one on a tiller tree for a few min for a safety check.  Who you makin this one for?

Chester.

I should have the new riser finished this week end.

I will also be glueing up the limbs for the surprise bow over the week end.

Having a full time job certainly gets in the way of making bows.

Kanga did you ever finish this one? I would like to see the final result if you did.
