Spring 2008 "Walk The Talk"
« on: February 09, 2008, 08:41:00 PM »
Ken R (I'll ask him to introduce himself if he's not a regular here) has graciously offered to host the 2nd annual (soon to be very famous) "Walk The Talk" event. It's a great way to clock a bunch of bows on a level playing field. In doing this myths will be crushed and secrets will be revealed to all. I think it's the best thing a bunch of hobbyist bowbuiders can to to forward the craft. It's all about sharing as far as I'm concerned. None of us invented any of this stuff and most of us (myself included) are still building bows like it was 1940. Sign up or you"ll wish did! LOL Steve
Here are last year's numbers from the 1st annual event. We need more bows!
(All numbers are based on 10 grains per pound @28" AMO

James Patrick One piece Hybrid- 193.3 FPS / One piece Hybrid (with small tips)-188.7

Steve Quinton: 3 Piece Recurve 186.3

Steve Gardner: All wood selfbow (straight limbed) - 184.5

Mike Bird: One piece Hybrid- 184 / 3 piece Hybrid-182

Ernie Mckenzie: 3 piece Hybrid (w/camo)-182.5 / 3 piece Hybrid-180

Here are a few shots of last year's "grass roots" event. This year Ken is sure one up things.

How about a free online bow drawing for the Spring "Walk The Talk". I'll donate the one I send. Steve

If someone can build a bow that does 193 at ten gpp, drawn to 28"s I would have to see it to believe it, sorry but those numbers are not matched anywhere that I know of. Shawn

I am pretty sure there were several present who witnessed those numbers Shawn, at least thats what I read on another forum.

If you havent kept up with these guys they are Maniacal about bow performance and really push the envelope and tinker to get the MOST out of a bow. I think its really neat and have kept up with it and have even used some of thier thoughts in some of the limbs that I made.

Some people are not into the whole performance thing but for those that are I think these guys have put ALOT through trial and error in lam tapers, tip design, trap amounts, carbon lams, etc. and differnt theorys that try to inch out every FPS extra they can get and to produce a FAST bow with a heavy arrow. I`m not a speed freak , I tend to lean more towards forgiveness in a bow but I`m with shaun on the 193. That bow is smoking. I would like to see a pic of it and know some details like ...bow length , type of string and limb material. Look forward to more info.RC

I'm Donating my contest bow for a free online drawing...
When you see the drawing bow you might not be so enthused. I'm sure my bow won't win the speed contest, but it appears to be a good tough, quiet, straight shootin, 180 or so FPS design.
I've been hunting hard with it all year and will be until early April. If it survives until then, it will be my contest bow and the drawing bow. If it doesn't survive, I'll send another. How's this sound for drawing entree fine print:

1. Entrees will be received prior to 12 Noon on 4-18-08 by sending an email to Steve Quinton at [email protected]
I'll send the names to Ken on the day of the event.

2. Entrants must be registered members of a traditional forum. One entree per person.

3. Entrants must be U.S. Citizens

4. Prior to the event, I will send postage to Ken for the bow to be sent to the eligible drawing winner anywhere in the Continental U.S.A

I went to Steve's house and saw all the bows and had him run a few of my own hacked out bows through the shooting machine. The longbow that shot 193 did it over and over. It was a 68" hybrid longbow with bamboo cores and carbon front and back, no glass at all. It had tiny little limb tips and shot real nice. A flight shooter with a snappy release coaxed some amazing numbers out of this bow, you wouldn't believe it if you weren't there. Mike

Shawn one more point. I brought a production, pro made bow or two and at 10 grns a pound they were around 180 fps even. Pro builders have more to think about like longevity and safety so they can't push the limits so to speak.

Yeah, I wasn't there, but I trust Mike, Steve and Steve, who were all there... you have to remember, a 175-180 bow at 10 gpp is a great performing bow... BBP's bow is undoubtedly one of the fastest bows anywhere...

BBP has dropped out of archery talk on us... sad... come back James!!! :0)

I was lucky enough to own one of Steve (IBEX)'s bows.  A cocobolo TD recurve with carbon backed limbs...

I put it through a chrony...
I forget the exact numbers, and arrow weight, but it was the fastest bow through a chrony that I had ever witnessed, and I have put a bunch of top bows through the same test..  MY Winex carbon limbed DAS bow is faster, but I am using light arrows with it...

His bow was not just fast, but a great looker, and a fine hunting bow as well.

I buy and sell a ton of bows..
The first question I generally get is "..how fast is it..", so I KNOW it matters to most..lol    ;)

I know Steve to be a hunter first..
The speed bow thing is just for giggles..
I am glad to see it...
Glad to see anybody pushing the envelope in bow delelopment...
Just as car racing improves street automobiles, I feel this can lead to improved bow design.

Keep up the good work guys..
