home,made drum sander with pictures
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:57:00 PM »
Thought you guys might enjoy this, I just finished my drum sander,  thought i would put some pictures up.  its a 4.5"X6" drum runs at  1000 RPM has a capacity up to 3 inchs, powered by a 1/2hp motor i had laying around the garage.   the drum is plywood stacked with bondo over it and lapped to the deck.  the picture does not include the belt guard or the vaccum hood because i have not made them yet!.  i sanding a piece of packing keeny sent out and got 0.002 inches off square width wise on the board.
total coast less then 100$ (i had the motor)
I plan to add a variable speed Feed with a little DC geared motor i have also laying around..

here are the pictures enjoy!!

That is awesome!  I tried building one of those and never could get it to work right.  It vibrated too much.

so far no vibrations,  I was surprised how quite it runs.  i will fire it up later and post a video. it is super sold, i am sure that helps.  the 1/2 shaft is drill rod, so the shaft is true.  and the framing is double stacked 3/4" ply.  i bisketed the first ply then put the second ply on so the joints would be backed by solid wood.  plan on adding a siccior jack elevator once i can sand some oak boards to thickness. the motor was a spare but it is a supper quite motor,  i dug it out of a trash can several years ago,  it had a bad toggle switch.

pillow blocks came from the big auction site,  i took 2 weeks to find a good deal on them.  ended up paying 4.50 apiece plus reasonable shipping.  i got lucky on those.  thanks for all the positive feed back guys, it works like a champ, it does now have a dust hood that hooks up to my vaccum cleaner on it.  and its time to change the emery cloth.  it did clog 6 rigid vacuum cleaner HEPA's prior to wearing out the paper!
