help! string slap!

what is the average brace height of a longbow? i have inherited a nice old bow and i put a string on it the same lenght as the old one i got with it. shots like a dream but the string is slapping the base of my thumb--ouch! it's braced at 5" right now.

I'd raise the brace height to 6" or till it stops slapping your thumb.

Most of the old bows went by the ol' fistmele... that's somewhere between 6-7"  :)
