New to the forum - question about bamboo suppliers
« on: November 26, 2009, 01:01:00 AM »
Hello all,

I'm new here. I have a few board bows under my belt but now I'm wanting to play around with some bamboo backings. I've seen some guys recommending this supplier  http://www.mastergardenproducts.com/bambooplanks.htm  as a good place to get raw bamboo. Of course you still need to plane it down, but it's my understanding (and experience) that no one really sells glue-up ready boo backing strips anyway. This stuff seems like a really good deal in that you can get a LOT of boo to work with, relatively cheaply. Has anyone used this source or perhaps have a good alternate source to try? I'd like to get several pieces - probably a dozen or more, so it doesn't pay to be shelling out $20+ per piece of boo. Also, my apologies if I'm crossing a line by posting a link to a retail site.

It looks good to me..not sure what type it is though....maybe Moso bamboo.  Here is another site where you can order different widths. I have never tried them but a friend recommenced it to me

Here is a site of a fella has that will sell you a strip of pre-planed and flattened, ready to glue on boo for a very cheap price.
 http://www.primalneedarchery.com/Bow-Building-Supplies.html
If you want to get hand picked boo for backing and do the flattening yourself you can get great boo from Mike Yancey, a sponsor here.  Mike has all the lumbers, boo, and any other wood bow supplies you may need and has super customer service.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the replies/suggestions. I remembered that I'd heard of Frank's Supply, somewhere in my reading before.

I like Franks myself. Their Moso bamboo is 2" wide and 8' long. Gives me room to move things around if needed. If you're not going to be using a lot, I'd contact David Knight, like Chupa said.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've already concluded a deal with David K. to get a couple core and with boo for two bows for my wife and I. I'll be contacting him after that to get some more boo for some other bow projects I'll be undertaking.
