Help! Serving Size for 10 Strand D97
« on: December 30, 2009, 06:13:00 AM »
My center serving came loose on my flemish twist D97 bow string. I reserved it but now my arrow nock is very, very loose fitting on the string. Actually, it wasn't fitting tight enough before either. So, I double served it and now my arrow nock is way, way too tight! I don't want a really tight fit, but I don't want it where my arrow falls off the string either.

Can someone please tell me what size, material, and brand of serving I need to get the ideal fit for my arrow nocks? I am using a D97, ten strand, flemish string. My arrows are Beman MFX 500 Classics that use the standard Easton X nock. Thanks for any and all help!

Just run a few strands of any string material length wise under the serving until you find how many you need.  Cut the extra strands off and trim it down after serving.

Thanks for the quick reply. Won't the strands "bunch-up" together on one side of the string while I'm spinning my serving jig around the string?

I have moved this post to the Powow forum in hopes of more ideas. Thanks to Apex Predator for his quick reply here. I still may go with his advice but I would like to see what all ideas are out there first.

Nope, I just built an 8 strand D-97 string this morning and used 4 strands of B-50 to build up the diameter.  Worked like a champ.  I run it from string loop to string loop, and tie it as tightly as I can.  Cut off the excess very carefully after completing the serving.

I had to underserve with mono first (got a bunch of fishing line laying around).   It worked great...you do get a lip where the serving material goes over the mono which isnt that big of a deal imho.   If you do use mono it takes quite a bit more to lock it down then serving does....if you do to little the serving will undo your knot...hmm now that I type this I wonder if I shouldnt have counter served underneath.   Anyways I think I used 10lb mono with .021 62 braid on 5/16ths classics.

Apex that sounds like a great idear also.  I've tried adding by leaving 6"es or so over hang and it came out pretty crappy, effective but ugly as sin LOL!

Here is what I do for my strings and it works out well, ymmv.

When I make a string, I serve it for about 1/2" and check to see how my nock of choice fits.  If it is loose, I remove the serving by winding it back on the spool and wrap some dental floss around my string as if it was the serving material.  After one course of floss I serve it again for 1/2" and recheck the nock fit.  Rinse and repeat until satisfied.

I only do this for the location on the string where I think the nock will be located on the string, the remainder of my serving is never double (floss) served.

I make my strings out of 8 strands of D97 and serve with the thickest Halo.  Next time I buy serving material I'll buy thinner serving.  I don't anticipate doing that until about 2032 however, this stuff lasts a long time!

I build 10 strand fast-flite plus strings, and double serve with .018 diamondback serving. They fit gold tip nocks perfect.
I didnt miss, thats right where I was aiming
