I am at one year
« on: February 05, 2010, 10:00:00 PM »
I have hit one year in the bow making world.  It was about this time last year that I traded some osage to a guy in exchange for a selfbow.  After helping him cut the wood, I got interested in building my own bow.  I cut some wood for myself and got to work.  I have completed 3 bows so far.  My first ended up at 30# after the classic rookie mistakes.  Bow #2 was a 50# D style bow with snake skins.  I hunted with it, but didn't have any luck.  Bow #3 was a 30# youth bow for my son.  And today, I sinew backed a bow for the first time.  I have 2 bows in the works now.  I plan on doing this for at least another 40 years.  Thanks to everyone who has helped me over the last year.

The trade for the bow that got me started didn't turn out so well.  The bow was worthless.  I had asked for a 50-60# bow to hunt with.  What I got was a bow that when strung, had a brace height of 0".  The string lays flat against the belly.  The arrow shelf is right in the middle of the handle so when you hold the bow, your hand is on the bottom fade.  And the draw weight is maybe 30#.  I can hold it sideways in front of me and draw it to about 30".  At least it got me interested.
