Need Help With Woods
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:52:00 PM »
I have the opportunity to buy the dimensional lumber listed in the post below from a fellow who's getting out of wood working, but I need to know if this lumber has value in using it for bows.  I'd appreciate your comments.

I have completely gotten away from making turkey calls and I have a stock of wood that I need to get rid of. The first offer over $50.00 can have all of the dimensioned lumber! This is not junk cutoffs, they were all picked out for either grain or sound, should keep you busy for a while.

I have:

10-14" pieces

1ea 1x3 quilted persimmon
1ea 1x3 persimmon
1ea 1x4 persimmon
1ea 1x8 curly ash
1ea 1x8 hard rock maple
1ea 1x6 hard rock maple
4ea 1x3 Chinquapin oak with worm holes
3ea 1x6 walnut
1ea 2x2 claro walnut
1ea 1x3 curly cherry

15" to 24"

2ea 1x3 ash
1ea 1x6 hard rock maple
5ea 1x3 black locust
1ea 1x6 black locust
1ea 1x3 red cedar
6ea 1x6 rec cedar (some nail holes)
1ea 1x2 tiger maple about 6' long

1/4 inch thick pieces

2ea 6" wide red cedar 24" long
1ea 2" wide red cedar 24" long
1ea 6" wide sassafras 10" long
1 ea 6" wide purpleheart 10" long
1ea 6" wide osage orange 10" long
1ea 4" wide sassafras 8" long

There are a couple of pieces of heartwood green poplar that makes a great sounding call.
I have a bunch of miscellaneous poplar and pine under my bench that I dont want either, I will throw that in with the above wood.

I also have a couple of Osage Orange staves around 66" long or so to make selfbows out of. They are ready to work. I will take 15.00 a piece for them. I can show you a kid's bow that I made for my daughter from this tree, it is strong and has a little snakey characteristic in the bottom limb.

If duck calls are your game, I have a piece of very dense south american hardwood, I think it is pau or something but it makes a great call. This piece is approximately 12" long by 7" thick and 8" wide (will make lots of calls!!) I will take 25.00 for this.

Better jump on the osage staves if they are good.  The other stuff doesn't have much value for bow building but is a good price for someone making calls or small projects.  Chad

I'm not sure, but I would think some of those woods could be used in making risers and nock overlays.

All those peices seem to short to make a bow out of. All the curly woods are nice for risers though

I agree on the osage staves...heck of a deal there.  As for the other stuff, I agree that it would be decent riser material.

$50 sounds pretty good for all of that, IMO.

Da,

Do you have pics of the Osage staves and the thickness dimensions? I might be interested in those.
