Dust collectors
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:35:00 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm looking for a little advise on dust containment.I'm putting together a basement work shop and I've never used a dust colector system before.

Because it is in the basement dust is a big issue,I just dont know if a 1 1/2 -2 horse unit from grizzly will be way overkill for what few tools I will have down there. I'm planning on my 14" bandsaw, spindle sander, and a 12" disk sander.

Does any one use the ceiling mounted unit? These seem sufficient given my work space (20' x 12')and the number of tools.

Lost inside a 674 page Grizzly tool catalog,
Matt

I think the more the better. 1 1/2 horse is about right. The celing unit only gets the very fine stuff that floats in the air and is very important because that is the stuff that really gets in your lungs. If you want to keep the basement relatively clean you need both.Don't forget to ground the system to prevent static electricity.Good dust control is the most important tool in your shop.  Bob

Good advise !! A fan to exhaust out a window will work instead of ceiling mount in warmer climants. the more you do the more you will thank yourself as time goes on and it will. dont blink cause another year will be gone soon. Have fun ,enjoy!!!

I have a basement shop with all the power tools you mentioned, and more. The 1.5hp dust collector will work fine. I also use an air filter on the ceiling.  Without the dust collector and air filter, I couldn't work in the basement. Building an air filter is fairly easy, and much cheaper then buying one.

An air filter like jets afs-1000b in addition to a 1 1/2 hp dust collector should be more than enough for those tools.I have this set up and it works great.

Thanks for the help guys,

I guess it makes sense that if I dont have the dust collector the dust has just as much opportunity to go through my lungs as the ceiling mount air cleaner.

Who am I kidding, sooner or later there is going to be more tools in there so I guess overkill is no longer an issue.

Is there any past threads that come to mind that showed the home made air cleaner? That is more up my ally any ways.

I would recommend also wearing a mask, as the dust collection systems are not 100%, and it's something you don't want to take chances with.

I have a JDS 2000 ceiling collector, and a Jet 1/12 hp dust collector.
The old-lady still complains about the dust.
You are not going to suck all of it up!
Use a respirator, dust masks don't cut it.

I just purchased a dust collector this morning. 1 1/2 horse 1200CFM. But it came with a 30 micron bag. Needless to say I will be ordering atleast a 5 micron to replace it. If the price had not been right I would have passed on this unit.
Just something to check on when you order your machine.
Good luck
