applying snakeskin to leather quiver?

need some help applying snakeskin to my kinati quiver (black leather) what kind or glue do i use? do i trim to size before i apply?  do i seal it with anything afterwards? im a first timer need some of you'alls wisdom

I've been wondering the same thing, only adding to a quiver I'm building.

depending on what glue you use it can stretch/shrink during application and curing. is the skin tanned or just dried? im not sure that a simple dried skin would be very good if it got wet, might have to seal it with something. i have some scraps i can do some experimenting and let you know what i find works well if its just dried skin.

i just tried tb3 and it didnt stick to some 5 oz leather i had. im trying now by dampening the skins first then applying to a piece of sized leather with tb3 in theory this may work better, since tb3 is water dilutable while its still liquid, the skin may take some of it in along with the small amount of water. ill post results. otherwise i can try spray contact cement, and superglue, although i know superglue will make skins transparent to some degree and they work best over darker colors.

as far as a finish over the essentially raw skins, maybe a shellac or something similar to help water resistance. also, tb3 shrinks as it cures, and it will pull the edges of your skins with it. you might want to tape or bandage down them if i figure out it will work with leather

I've used Barge cement for snake skin to leather and it worked very well.  I also got a spray product, from Tandy I think, that was a clear sealer and sprayed that over it.  Seemed to work and hold up.

yea i was thinking barge cement would do it too, that stuff will glue just about anything. so far the tb3 adhered better with a dampened skin, so i think if you want to use that you would be ok. i pulled the pieces from each other to test the bond after the hour and a half and it was peeling the back layer off the snakeskin so it was a decent bond. just be sure to size the leather with a thin layer of tb3 first if you do, ive had the stuff shrivel up pretty good if it soaks in too much glue.

the tb3 definitly worked after working a small amount of water into the skins.when i pulled the pieces apart it pulled apart the skins. as far as finish goes id guess you could use just about anything thats clear, stuff like laquer and shellac has been used in the past for leather stuff such as sword scabbards and other stuff so it would probably work here too. if you wanted, you could use superglue applied with a rubber glove to seal it just be sure to use a light touch to spread the glue and keep it from any moisture till it dries or it will fog.
