B-50 spool sizes....How many strings can i make?
« on: April 08, 2010, 10:25:00 PM »
Being a new guy and never making a string or a successful bow (board bow per 4est is my current project) I am curious to the amount needed to make a few strings.  If i order the 1/4 spool will it last for a while or is the 1000ft+ used up quickly in just a few strings.  Red oak board bows and maybe a self bow are all i can see in my near future so will a 1/4 spool in a couple different colors be enough to do a few bows with a flemish string jig or should i order a whole spool.  I just dont want to spend more cash than i have to to get started.

I don't know the exact number of strings you will get out of a couple of 1/4 pound spools-- but you will be able to make a BUNCH of strings with that much--(more than just a few).

I still have the first 1/4# roll of B-50 I ever bought though it is getting small. You will be really good at making strings and bows for them before you use it up. Only trouble is you will likely start gathering more colors and more types of string material as you go. That's my story.

I change from black/red to black/gold. Seemed to me that the red likes to bleed color. Maybe they all do and the red just stands out more. I love the B-50 though.

what they said: get the 1/4 # spools.
i discovered i love flemish twist with all my heart, made like 20 strings, and i've barely dented the three 1/4 # spools i bought.

Two 1/4# spools will last years. I make a standard 14 strand string mostly and have made maybe 20 strings and still have almost half the spool left on each white and black. I agree that red bleeds too much. I quit using it because when I string a bow before final snading and finishing it stains the wood in the string grooves.

dangit, sad to hear that about the red, that was my next move, a 1/4# of red.  nevermind, then.

there's a million neat variations on the flemish twist too, i just made one with all blue, and one gold thread in each bundle, looks neat as heck.

hey canders: hop on google, look up how to make a flemish twist jig, pound nails into a board (easy), then go to youtube, look at like 10 different videos in a row WHILE YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE THE STRING.  the trick is so simple but i literally sat through 10 videos trying to figure it out.
afterwards, of course, you will slap your forehead.  extremely simple to do.

also: buy serving and a server.  i got the middle thickness serving thread, it works great.

wax: i tried the soft wax in a tube and the hard string makers wax, they are both great.  (soft is easier, tho)
