nock and point tapers??
« on: February 11, 2008, 10:25:00 PM »
When you make your tapers, how long do you make each?  I just made a jig for my sander and it works great, I just don't know how long to make them.  Thanks, Jonathan

Go a ways, check the nock/tip, go aways more.  Repeat.  Soon you'll just know.  :bigsmyl:

I have a few nocks and points with me when I grind the tapers, and try them on the tapers until I find the depth of taper that works best, and then lock in the jig.

I make my point tapers 1 1/8" long, the nock tapers I leave about an 1/8" dia circle at the point. Keep in mind as the length of your tapers vary in length so does the final length of your arrows.

aromakr's dimension is probably optimal. I think the standard for  the taper is 11/64" on the end.  So if you make the taper  1/8", it  will  use nearly all the available length in the  point and you will  not have any shaft hitting the bottom of the hole in the point.
If the taper  hits the bottom of  the hole in the point, the  point  will not grip the taper and  will  be easily  knocked off in use.
