Youth board bow
« on: June 03, 2010, 06:11:00 PM »
Looking for suggestions on dimensions and wood for a youth board bow.

Bows will be for a 7 year old and a 9 year old. So was thinking #15@25.

Was thinking 1.25" wide then tapering to 3/8" at the nock. Was debating whether it needs a handle since the hands are small, just use a leather wrap with a shelf that way. I can't find the link I had to Ferret's discussion on building youth bows.

I have access to a ton of woods, all for decent prices, was debating between hickory, birch, ash, and red oak. All are about the same cost.

Will do 1/4" poplar shafts most likely for the arrows, although I do love my bamboo arrows and saw a pack of 24" bamboo stakes at the garden centre for only $2.

Try this.  Hopefully it will help you out.

Thanks for the chart, will save that

Any recommendations on wood, or does it not really matter as long as the grain is straight for kids bows?

i use red oak boards rom lowes, the 1/4 inch stuff down on the floor racks where the 1x2's and 1x4's are. 48 inch long, 1 1/2" tapering to 1/2" tips yields 15#@25" with a glue on handle.

Thanks guys. I found some red elm for cheap so will give that a shot for some pyramid bows, hopefully getting around 15@25.
