I made a kids bow for a friends 5 yr old son, from a 1/4 inch red oak slat, 48 inches long. I glued on an 8 inch riser, faded it 2 inches on both sides, leaving four inches of grip and arrow rest (plenty for non-adult hands). I made the profile as a plain longbow, with no attempt at reflex, and pyramid taper from the 2 inch wide fade down to just under 1/2 inch tips. brown paper backed, w/TBIII. it needed virtually no tillering. i made a locator grip, wrapped in bailing twine set in TBIII, and twisted down the fibers smooth, then lightly sanded when dry. i put on some tip overlays (nothing fancy, just a couple scraps of oak) taped it all up to paint it and used the simple camo job build along here on tradgang. pulled of the tape and sprayed a couple coats of semi-gloss, and then topped it off with a coat of wax. obvioulsy, i went through a lot more trouble than a kids bow really takes, but that was the point, i wanted to do all the steps i would otherwise do, just in miniature. i even twisted him up a flemish twist string in blue and yellow. it was a blast, and ended up about 14 lbs at 17 inches. and it was safe enough to overdraw several inches, so i had no problem handing it off to a kid. total cost was less than ten dollars, as it was all scraps, or on hand matl (except for the slat to begin with )
