Green turning blanks

how do I dry green turning blanks before making risers? The ones I have are sealed in wax and the seller says they are green. Can I use my heat box to dry them. What moisture content is acceptable. Thanks guys

what do u mean turning blanks  ??? im thinkin wood for a leath to turn wood ? if so they probly too short and probly not bow wood  give some more details and ill see iff i can help ya  brock even pic s if u can

The ones I have are 1.5"X1.5"X18" I have some Cocobolo, purpleheart, and some bubinga.

Try them in the heat box at 100 degrees. You will need to monitor them on a day to day basis, checking the MC with a moisture meter. The rate at which the MC decreases will depend on what part of the country you live in, due to humidity. If you turn the heat up and try to dry them too fast it could cause checking. I try to shoot for an MC of 6% to 10%.

They will check for sure if you take the wax off and try to speed dry them in a hot box.  If you can send them back and get a reufund that would be best.  Then order some dry stuff somewhere else.  If you are stuck with them then take the wax off and let them air dry for 1.5-2 years to get the moisture content down to 6-8%.  You most likely will get some checking from just air drying.

Bubinga and purpleheart can easiliy be found dried for cheap.  Cocobolo is tougher to find dry, but can be done.  Chad

I'd leave the ends covered with wax to limit checking
