Staring over AGAIN.
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:11:00 AM »
I changed my anchor point and draw (again for the 3rd time) because I wasn't getting back to 6:00 with right arm (think I’m at 12 and 6 now). Was also shooting high from the tree, which seemed to be an issue with form. Was stopping when nock was on the edge of mouth and holding at full draw for a couple seconds. Now shooting more instinctive trying to get the athletic movement that Terry discusses. But it's like I've started over.
My questions:
I was at 28" draw length now I'm at 31" (had to have it triple check). Is this normal?
Do I need to change brace height? Was 8 3/8"
Have a Martin Dream Catcher 50# @ 28". I think I add 3lbs per inch. So am I pulling 59 lbs?
I’m going to need longer arrows maybe 32”. I shoot aluminum. Any suggestions on what arrow set up to start tuning with?

Hey Tim with the current draw length and weight your at I would think 2018's with 145 grain tip would be the ticket for you?

Tim

If your goal is a 50 pounder at 28, if you go to the draw length of 31 you would gain approximately 9 lbs. maybe a little more but not much more than that.

On the arrows, if you're wanting to shoot carbon, I would suggest Axis 400.  With 175 gr.  Broadhead upfront.  The Axis 400's are a strong penetrating arrow.  The first question you need to ask yourself

Are you over Bowing yourself.

If 59 lbs. is what you want to pull all the time, then start your arrows set up.  I would suggest going to a traditional archery shop in your area.  One of the decent videos that are for sale on here "Master of the Longbow" vol. I  II, if you just getting started, and even if you're not just getting started, it is a lot of good information.

But the main thing is, are you going to keep that bow at that poundage.  I know for me, 60 lbs. would be too much.  When you over bow yourself, it's easy to get into accuracy problems.

Broken Arrow & Anointed Archer. First I love your sayings at the bottom. He is our only hope.

2018's. Thanks I'll start there.

I'm not sure if I'm over bowing. I've only been using new draw for 17 days now. It seems with my old draw, where I was holding a full draw for a couple seconds I had difficulty holding the weight. Now I'm releasing as soon as I get to full draw so I'm not feeling the weight. No muscle pain after shooting.
Is there a way to test if I'm over bowing?

Well what he is asking only you can answer.  Is 59lbs to much wieght for you to draw? and the best way I know how to tell is if you can come to full draw, anchor and release repeatedly for several targets, maybe a entire 3D course then my guess you are not pulling to many pounds.  However if you start getting wild after a few targets and start losing your form then good chance you are over bowed.

Dead deer do not know the difference between
40 lbs. and 60 lb. bows, but you most definitely will, if you cannot place a well placed arrow in its intended target than you're over Bowed.  I should also add, consistently.
