New bow born :-) ...
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:44:00 PM »
Finally finished my fourth working bow, and got it test shot today at the local Archery club.

It's an Bamboo backed Ipé bow, with a Limbali handle, encased by two very thin layers of Larch, and a toplayer of Ipé.

It is 65" nock to nock, with a draw weight of 60# @ 29".

She had a very difficult birth, primarily due to a knot in the lower leg (Had to very carefully tiller around it, as it started to crack down the side - but got it arrested before any damage was done!), along with the topleg having a very bad hinge in the upper middle part (still a little visible in the pictures).

(Knot in lower limb)

She actually started out as a much taller lady at 69" nock to nock, but unfortunately broke at the tip in the lower limb when strung first time after Long string tillering :-(.

After getting over the shock, and getting her repaired (had to cut two inches off each leg), the string actually broke the Boo in the nock, and split about 3 inches of boo down along the leg, that had to be repaired as well :-( (By that time I started looking very intensely from her to the pile of firewood / scraps standing in the corner of my workshop *LOL*).

Finally I got it finished, took it to the archery range - and shot arrows for a couple of hours.

Among those arrows were my first arrow from a Selfbow to pass 160 meters :-) ... (We shoot after a bench placed about 162 meters from the shooting line - who ever is the furthest away with their best arrow has to by the next round *LOL*) ...

The handle was a lot of fun to make - even though I made the Ipé top layer too thin in the middle (there is a little crack there, visible in the second picture).

I am actually considering "Broken limb" for her name, but I am not sure about that one?  ...    :biglaugh:
Kind Regards
