Bamboo & Dye?
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:36:00 PM »
I have just finished creating this bamboo backed osage and I am looking for some photos of your favorite dye jobs you may have. I am thinking about just brown dye trying to make it a little darker around the nodes our maybe a light green base with brown and black mixed in there somehow.
I haven't posted a picture on here either so I created a photobucket account and will try and get that to work on here also.
I would love to see some of your creations.

Good looking bow!  I just finished a boo backed ipe/osage bow blank from James Parker at Huntworthy Productions (picture below).  I had him do the dye job for me, but he uses dyes from Pine Hollow Longbows.  He applies it with a mouth atomizer.

Here it is after I finished it. It took awhile as I got a little sidetracked.

I use a bunch of coats of medium brown leather dye then lighten it between the nodes with a scotch bright pad. Sometimes I make the bows back almost mahogany/black, sometimes lighter.

Here is one of the lighter versions.

That looks really nice, and it was what I was shooting for also. I had it a little darker then ran a scotch pad over it also. I thought it was dried up enough, I let it sit a day, but I removed it a bit more when I applied some wax to finish it off.
What do you use after you have it all stained up to protect it?

This is my favorite dye job to date.  I used rit dye.  Next time I might use leather dye depending on how color fast it is in the sun.
