37 inch Atsugewi Juniper Hunting Bow
« on: August 12, 2010, 11:32:00 PM »
Hello, this bow is going to be my hunting bow for this year it is nearly done but still needs a buckskin handle rabbit fur and the tribal painting. This bow is made from Juniper and is 37 inches long and weighs 55 pounds at 22 inch draw, string is sinew. the full draw picture is drawn to 20 inches because I do not like to stress the bow while taking the picture, thanks for looking.

Just curious at a 22" draw I can't imagine that arrow will have much velocity to it huh?  What are you hunting with it?  Personally I would use it for Cape Buffalo or the like LOL  :)

P.S. I love it and will probably make one too just to say I did it!

The bow was made with a hatchet drawknife and rasp

Joey- this bow has plenty of power to kill a deer or any other animal, my ancestors have been doing this for hundreds of years with this same design.

Very cool little bow. I love the full draw bend!!!
Looking forward to seeing the completed bow in full dress and pics of your quarry after the hunt. Will you post pics of your arrows and describe them for us.
I have a 49" ERC bow I plan to sinew back and I thought it was short!  I find these shorty bows more difficult to conquer and shoot well but with practice I know it can be done.
Again, this is a very cool bow!!!

Pat- my arrows are nothing special just 28 inch poc shafts but I am working on some dogwood arrows but dont think they will be finished by hunting season

I hear alot of people saying that these small bows are hard to shoot it is the complete opposite for me I have a hard time shooting anything over 44 inches. 37 inches is just about the right length. I shoot the traditional way with the arrow on the right side of the handle and the top of the bow pointing to the left almost horizontal and this shooting style seems to work very well with short bows

Stoned you are right, I always laugh when people say they have a shortbow when their bow is around 50 inches because that is a longbow for me
