Natural Set
« on: August 31, 2010, 05:15:00 PM »
Have a Yew Stave with a natural set of about 3", I am just in the shaving process, just started to floor tiller.  I am wondering if I should try heating bending at this point, continue to build or scrap.  Thoughts Please.

Sounds like a nice set-up for some recurve tips. Or reflex from mid-limb to tip with heat. ART

I would recommend getting it shaped and close to floor tiller then put it on a caul that has some reflex and use a heat gun, yew takes heat well.

Thanks to all, I thought I was headed towards scraping.  Part of bow making is trying new things, Right?  Will see what others think but I think we will be adding reflex this weekend.

Thanks

Removing 3" of deflex and adding 3" of reflex is trying to move too much wood too far. What ArtB suggests is a more practical idea. IMO
Dry heat will work well and I like to use a little veg oil to keep from scorching.

I would steam some recurves in
