thickness and tiller...
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:46:00 PM »
so i was outside a while yesterday , and a good bit today so far , and after working on my tiller , i think i may have had an almost critical oversight...or two...

for one , theres a knot about midlimb  on one side , and i tried to lay it out so that most of that area would probably be removed by the time it was finished , but now i think it looks like there may still be some of it left , and what i seemed to be running into was that when on the stick, the place where the knot is , was acting like a hinge , and that was my high spot for the giz. so last night i was sitting here contemplating my next move , and i decided to bust out the slide rule/micromter and i was just sort of eyeballing the limbs , and when i would slide it down the limb , it didnt look like the taper was that even , nor did it look like the sides of each limb were matching up depth or taper wise...yay...

so for some reason , today , i decided to map it all out , in 2" increments and get an exact look at the dimensions...boy was i off...  Either from using the rasp in mylap most of the time , or the fact that the rasp wasnt really level to begin with , i ended up almost 4mm difference overall from limb to limb , but i also realized i was off almost 3mm in some places from side to side on one limb. The worst was the side with the knot.  and not surprisingly , the hinge where the knot was located was also the only even spot on the whole bow.For the last 2 hours i have been measuring and evening up the one limb , with itself , only to realize that i was still a mil over at least from the thin side...

Now I'll get to my question. What type of bowyer are you? I know lots of tribes couldnt have possibly had any sort of pre-defined measurement system , and i have seen some guys on here ising dial indicators to measure thickness  , but i am just curious what the most common is.

Do you even measure Thickness once you rough shape and floor tiller?
If so what method and how in depth do you measure?

Back out to the stick...

From floor tiller stage I remove wood until I get the bend I want at the weight I want. Very little measureing except for the initial layout.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Every board bow I ever tried to build with a knot became fire wood. I would not waste my time on a piece of wood with a knot. Just my thinking
