Field Tip Removal on Wood Shafts?
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:23:00 PM »
I have some old wood arrows and I would like to remove the field tips.  I don't know what was used to put them on, but I cannot get them off.  I tried an open flame to weaken the bond, but that did not work.  Should I try boiling them?  Will that ruin the arrows?  Any other suggestions?  Gotta get some broadheads on there... Its almost snow goose season!

Did you use a propane torch?  Some of the glue I use you have to get the point almost red hot to get the glue to release.  I use a small canaster propane torch to do this.

A word of caution though.  Make sure you have the point pointed in a safe direction.  Some of the glue when you heat it will build up gas behind the point and make it shoot off without warning.

I'll second that warning.  I recently re-set some broadheads before a hunt in Oklahoma.  When I put the torch to the field point I normally wait until I see glue bubble at the back of the point and then pull it off with a pair of pliers.  This didn't occur and took me totally by surprise when it shot off the arrow and landed on my work bench!

I'll third the warning!
Heat should work, I don't know of a better way.
