"Anti-fever" feature
« on: November 05, 2010, 11:37:00 AM »
does anyone know how to build something into a bow that keeps your heart from beating out of your chest, when 3 does walk up to you 20 yards away? LOL

i know theres a hunting forum, but i wanted to share with the rest of the bowyers, since most of us hunt...

for all the time to build, all the time to practice...it still just sucks when you miss

I have to agree with John,

I've had big bucks come in and did not really nervous (still had the ol'pumper pumpin) but I had three pointer come in the other day within about 8 or ten yards and as I went through the motions of pluggin him even though I was giving him a free pass I noticed I was shaking like a leaf.

When He left I thought "Man! Still good to feel that". If I ever quit feeling that even just a little I'll stay at the house and shoot bales and build bows.

If you don't get excited when deer are close, then it's time to quit hunting.

Having said that, maybe what we need is a means to put a cap on the excitement that stops it at some managable level.  I crossed that threshold last week and missed a chip shot on a buck.  Should have been my first buck with a bow I made.

hahaha...you really get that worked up over some does? I mean I get jazzed a bit when I know I'm going to get a shot. Mostly because it's a ways inbetween shots! haha  But it just makes me focus more.

I get it bad. I notice that it gets more controlable with each encounter though and by the end of season I can manage it better. It all starts over the next year. Of course, it rears it's head when I decide that I am going to take the shot. I suspect this may be the way I meet my maker someday when the pipes start plugging up. The rush is that good. There is nothing in the world that makes my body react that way.

I just wanted to poke a little fun at myself for missing. I bet I've killed between 70 and 80 deer with every caliber of rifle known, thats why I took up this stick and string thing.

i don't want it to be clinical.  I love that rush. Thats the most alive feeling...the problem is keeping it manageable. Believe me I know better than to lose my cool.  I have "been there" in the sandbox, and I go back sometime next year.

I get that rush every time I get a shot though. Does, bucks, it doesn't matter. Those "ghost" does just appeared in front of me.  I turned around for just 30 seconds to scan behind me, when I turned back around there they were...  I was less nervous seeing tracers come way.

oh and last thing, in all seriousness, i did learn a few things. man, its one thing to practice at 15 and 20 yds, standing, with plenty of room.  its completely different shooting a recurve, guessing the distance, in the brush, kneeling.

i love that feeling of building a bow and having it shoot like i want, and i can't wait to feel the rush of having an animal right in front of me again...now i just gotta put it together with hunting skills that are different than pulling a trigger
