Lam thickness for pronounced D/R 3 piece LB?
« on: November 19, 2010, 05:05:00 PM »
I have used Jason Scotts Lam chart for my mild D/R LB's and its great. I am working out the details for a three piece pronounced D/R LB. If I were to use the chart for a guideline how many pounds is increase for each inch reduced on the limbs. And if I were shooting for a 50lb bow would I look at the 40lb specs since I am making a pronounced D/R limb? Any advise will help! Thanks Mark

Jason Scott would be the one to help you with that. He is really good at math.

I don't know much about the D/R part.. but the general rule of thumb if I remember is 10# per two inches.  These guys have a good chart to use..
swissbow.com.  They have a longbow chart for lam stack and length along with D/R.
God gave you hands, use them

D/R means deflex/reflex and describes the profile of the bow when unstrung.

Deflex ist the part of the limbs that are bend towards the shooter. deflex gives the bow stability while drawing. reflex is the outer part of the limbs that are bend forward. reflex increase the preload of the string and adds performance. The trick is to find a good combination between stability and speed.

Thank you both for your responses... you've no idea how that and the photo's helped.

The bows are beautiful.

Much Aloha... Tom    :archer2:

Hi Mark, if you shorten your bow by two inches ( one inch on each limb ) your draw weight will increase about 10 lbs. Another thing you have to consider is how much net reflex you will have, depending of the profile of the limbs and the limb pad angle. But I can't tell you how much, because I have no experience with three piece bows.

Well then Andy, it is time for the 3 piece...LOL

Thanks for your website by the way.. has great info.  I am doing my first one piece based on your build along.. with a few of my own twist of course.  But very nice web site.  I started out building 3 piece takes downs because of limited space.

Hope all the info helps Tom!  Feel free to post more or email if you want more info.  Swissbow is the man for long bows, I can help with the take down recurves

I'm making a Bench this weekend for my saws and such, and a work bench over the next month and along the way starting to make strawberry quava arrow shafts... so far have made one, but it jammed my router relief hole. It was just cut just to see.... and also only about 6 hours old..    :knothead:    But you know how youth is.... not chronological youth, mind you..

I've come across other issues since I cannot find a drill chuck large enough to hold the blank so am using a screw.... and that has issues too... but works from keeping the router sucking my blank out of a socket....

On and on....

So pics are certainly something I can do if you all want the scratch to match... well coffee can maybe... making a spine tester too...

Dream on dream on my missuse keeps saying
As long as I'm dreaming no toolshops she's paying
Dream on I do, and I started today
My table, my first, will confirm how I pray

Much Aloha....   :archer2:
