Primitive Outfitters in TBM?
« on: February 15, 2008, 05:09:00 PM »
Hi all,

Well apart from hunting Mountain Goats in BC I've always wanted to hunt Black Bear, spot and stalk style. I'd do the Grizzly hunt but with the cost I could hunt many other animals, so I've put that one aside for now.

I'm more of a "do-it-yourself" type hunter and I've only been on one other paid hunt before but the write up from Don T in the last TBM held my eye and I liked what I read.

I've looked into there site and the cost looks good, all I;m after I guess is pros and cons? I'm not after a world beater or trophy book animal as such... just a good solid hunt, bow in hand and daypack full.

A penny for your thoughts...  :coffee:

For Black Bear Al, I'm sure you could find something in the lower 48 that you could do-it-yourself. As far as Canada goes I'm not 100% sure but I think you have to have a guide unless you are a resident.

I've been hearing good things about Mike Schneider in British Columbia with his spot and stalk bear hunts. I forget what his website is but maybe someone else will post it for you. Good Luck, DAVE

If you are coming from another county to spot and stalk bears or for that matter from another state here in America, a guide isn't such a bad idea. Cuts out alot of the homework needed to find the good areas.

This is Michael's website. Michael has went to a traditional bowhunter ONLY outfitter.
I hunted with him last May in British Columbia. Spot n stalk for black bear. Great outfitter that has plenty of bears. I saw over thirty bears and stalked into killing range with my recurve of at least 15 bears. Questions call Michael or Mark at BSC.  Feel free to PM me if need be.

Thanks for the link John. I'll take a look and get back to you.

I was thinking along those lines as well Killenstuff.

Al, Jeff Lander is a good friend. You won't find a better person or outfitter and he's got a great area.

Al, I've been huntin with Jeff Lander for quite a few years. I've hunted BC with him since he got this area 2 years ago. He's got great black bear hunting as well as griz. I've bear hunted all western provinces bait and spot stalk for 15 years and his area hands down is the best I've seen. Moose are just as good, was up this fall with lots of sign and sightings. You will have an awsome time with Jeff no doubt. Bob

Although I have no experience hunting black bears with them I have hunted other species with both Jeff Lander and Michael Schneider. As far as outfitters go you couldn't go wrong with either one.

British Columbia would also be my choice for a spot and stalk black bear hunt. I beleive they have the highest concentration of bears as anywhere in the US and Canada.

Bannock PT, Jeff has once again made a very generous donation of a spot and stalk black bear hunt with Primitive Outfitters for the PBS Banquet in Pittsburgh next month.  I know Jeff is coming so you can probably pick his brain while you are there.

Hopefully one of the Alaska guys will chime in but I thought a lot of people were doing self guided on Prince of Whales Island. I think you can rent a cabin and then day hunt from there. From some of the stories I read it seemed to be reasonable in terms of price. You might want to check into that.
