Re-limbing an old recurve
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:20:00 AM »
I was thinking about trying building a bow, but was wondering if relimbing an old recurve would be easier.  I have an old Dick Palmer Brush Bow that is short and pulls 60#.  Too short and heavy for me, so I was wondering how I could relimb the riser at 50# and 62"?

In my opinion, I would build a new.  If you want to make the Palmer less pounds, sand the sides of the limbs.. narrow the limbs up.. that will decrease the # on that bow.

Just a couple of thoughts.

thanks for the thoughts Bradford.  Unfortunately it is really to short for me but I do like the grip.  I was thinking maybe just cut off the limbs and keep the riser and relaminate limbs to the riser.  Unfortunetly I am not a bowyer and have never built a bow.

I agree with Bradford. No since ruining a good bow. You probably won't be satisfied with the results of the fix. Maybe trade this bow for one that fits you better or sell this one and buy the one you want.

Well.. it just takes one to get you hooked.  I am doing a build along right now.  I am building 5 bows for christmas.  It is a great way to learn.

Keep your bow, and use it as a template for the riser..

If you really want to jump in.. read the build along a feel free to pm me any questions.

The build along post is under 5 bow build along for christmas!

Bradford, believe me I am following the build along.  You are amazing.  I have been convinced to not cut up a perfectly good bow.  It probably isn't worth much given what I see for sale on here.

Thanks for the advise.  This is the best group of guys on the internet.

George I agree with Bradford and once you make that first one then you can trade the template.
