Eagle Cap Road Trip
« on: February 16, 2008, 07:28:00 AM »
I'm planning a Fall Mule Deer hunt in the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area.
Anyone have any suggestions on best trail heads, any do's and dont's or any tidbits that will make the trip a little easier?
If you cut up your wife's french leather purse to make a tab, does that make you a redneck?

griz#1,

If you are looking for information about the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon, I would post the question on the Bowsite / Oregon page.

God Bless,

Paul

Paul,
Thank you so much for replying.  I did not know
that site existed.  I found it and posted my message.

God Bless and Good Hunting,
John

Griz,
Cameron Hanes of Eastman Bowhunting Magazine hunts that area.  You may be able to find some info there I remember him talking about this area in this book.      Joe

Joe M:

I really appreciate your response and I will look up his book and get a copy.  For me hunting out west would be a foreign territory and good information is hard to come by. Now if anybody out west would need information on swamp elk on the Eastern Shore I would be glad to share all I know.
Thanks,
John

I think the most important thing to have a good hunt up in the Caps is be in the best shape you possibly can! You'll be hunting at 7,500ft to 8,500ft with long packs in and out. Are you bivy hunting or going to set up a base camp to hunt out of?

I went on a 2 week elk hunt in the Eagle Caps Wilderness area. We went out of Hathaway, Oregon and went in aabout 12-15 miles in and saw alot of elk and mule deer. I missed a big 6x6 bull. Saw one monster mule deer buck and several other deer.  All were does. We only had a buck tag.  Make sure you are in excellent physical shape.  It is a good place to hunt.  If you are by Baker, Oregon make sure you stop and go through the Oregon Trail History Center.
