finishing white oak

i was doing a little browsing at the HD store the other dy , and they didnt have tung oil that i saw , but they had wipe on poly and teak oil , to name a couple.of course deft and other products , but im not interested in that.


my question , is what is better for sealing / finishing white oak. i will also be trying laminated leather for the handle area , so i wondered if i should do that first , then seal , or seal , then glue up the leather.

i also need to seal a couple arrows. i think they are ramin , they are from wally world , made in china.

the minwax stain/seal in bombay mahogany is pretty red , almost gaudy. i know they are just bunny arra's , but i want the wood sealed so i can wipe the mud/blood/guts/whatever off of it.

Find a gun shop hova and see if they carry the Tru-oil. I started out using tung oil and that took forever to build up a finish. You can use the Tru-oil on arrows also.........Art

Hova, I think Wally-World carries Tru-Oil in their sporting goods department with gun cleaning supplies.

leather first, then oil-
i oil the leather too, seals it up better for the wetter days, but remember leather has an easily attained(compared to wood) saturation level, so dont soak the oil to the leather, it can eventually turn to a soggy sponge- make your first coating a real good one, then just light subsequent oilings on the leather.

i was just hoping to seal the bow from moisture. i may not have been clear when i said im using leather , in that i will be puting a layer down , saturating it with superglue , then doing another 2 or 3 layers this way. then shaping it. i saw someone do it on here , but cant for the life of me find where or who it was.

i was thinkin about it today , and i will probably just pick up some wipe on poly , as i want the arrows to be sealed more like a poly than an oil finish. the bow , i might thin down the mahogany i stain i have , just to lighten it up a little , then wipe some poly over that to seal it up good.

its just a d-bow , so its not like im looking for any kind of award winning finish. i have been shooting it with no finish or rest or anything , and havent had any issues , but i know once i get out in the woods it will be in contact with snow and sweat and whatnot. and of course the arra's just for food safety , should be as sealed as possible.


most likely going to use some scrap red oak i have , and make blunts, that way i dont have to worry so much about contamination or bad shots.

as for the bow , i need to pick up a scale , caue the one i have is very ratchety , and doesnt give anywhere near an accurate reading as to what my bow is. i know its light , so i am going to pike it , and try to make nock grooves that dont look like they were made by a t-rex.

after that its off to the  goodwill for some old belts.


and i think im going to poly the bow , add the leather and superglue laminate , then shape the bow , and just go over the whole deal once real easy with poly to seal the leather , and cover any spots i might hit with the rasp.


thanks for the tips on the tru oil. i have some of that somewhere , but lord help me if i know where i put it. i like my white oak natural , but its going to be going hunting , so i need to darken it a bit so im not carrying a white stick around with me.

hova  for sealing a stave  good i love thrunder bird but most guys cant afford the 90 bucks for it  so tru oil is ur best bet u can get it at wally world  sportsmans wearhouse also has it in pint sized bottles and spry  brock

i just havent been taking many pics lately. i do need to get some to a member who sent me some cane shaft ,but i got a few others i need to get.

and the bow im finishing is just a stick...nothin fancy at all. ill get a pic up tho.

yup hova, thats how i build my handles on my bend thru the handle bows. find a saddlemaker/tackshop they have tons of relly good leather scraps for that-13oz leather(or whatever) i glue the layers together with conact adhesive, shape the handle, then attach to the bow, then wrap and stitch/lace the thinner leather handle wrap.
then treat everything with oil.

its all pretty basic stuff- you've got it figured out.

Well hov I am a little over half done with R&R and am enjoying the family. I will start my next attempt once I get back. Plus I have inatureviper long bow waiting on me to shoot once I get back there.

thats good that youre home.

ended up picking up some tru-oil at gander mountain about an hour ago , threw a nitrile glove on , and wiped on the first coat of tru oil. im so happy pat b said something about it , i forgot how awesome the stuff was. i love the smell. personally i think it smells like furniture polish , but the wife said it stinks , so...
