Paper Backing
« on: January 11, 2011, 06:00:00 PM »
Hey all, I am thinking about paper backing one of bow and was wondering what gauge is suitable? I have some paper used for masking off area while painting; is something like that too thing? Should I be looking at something more like the thickness of a paper bag?

most people use paper bag type paper. if i was to back something with paper , i would get some 100+ pound art paper...

then again i have heard of tissue paper being used (for looks ,  obviously...)

I always used grocery bag paper. Paper and glue combo is a strong backing for a bow. You want the paper to absorbe the glue so it becomes a solid paper/glue backing. The masking paper might repel the glue but if not it should work. There is a happy medium to think about. Too thick of a backing becomes a drag to the bow. Excess physical limb weight will slow your bow down so you want enough to protect but not so much it robs performance.
If you think you need more protection go with a rawhide or wood backing.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

its not like tape , its basically thin grocery paper . some have slick surfaces , but the stuff i used was like a thinner smoother version of grocery bag paper.

Thanks guys, I knew I didn't want card stock. But what Pat said make sense to me.

Hova, that sounds like the paper I have. Did you have success with this sorta paper?

I backed a red oak board bow with "craft" paper. It's slightly thicker than grocery bags but relatively the same.  Worked well.
