Scored some Hickory
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:18:00 PM »
I got to get out yesterday since the snow has melted some and took the dog for a walk. I had an idea I would scout some potential trees for bow wood, I brought my hand saw with me.

Low and behold, I found a small stand of shag hickory. I found a nice one and decide to take it down and haul what i could home. I have to go back and get the rest another day.

But these are the staves I got out of one section of the tree. After i split the log I found some insect damage to the hear wood. I am hoping it'll be ok....so tune back in to see what happens. They'll probably be ready around spring or summer?

Also if some could tell me if I should let them dry outside in my garage or inside my house?

Dave,
Don't let that stuff on the ground to long. Pat B and other have said it will get a fungus in it that makes it useless. So go back and get it ASAP and I dont think either would matter.
From what I have read here if I had green wood I would take it down to a bow blank, seal the back and ends, then put it on a form or straight board while it dried.
I am sure others will give you more insight and correct me where I am wrong.

If you got time take the bark off of them. Will be a-lot easier now than a few months from now. Also will take the worry of bugs damaging your wood. Bugs will attack Hickory. The warmer it is the faster they will dry. So where ever is the driest and warmest is the place  to put your staves. Dean

Thanks for the advice fellas; I got the staves inside my house. Once my draw knife shows up this week I will get the bark off. I seal the ends with TB II, but I think I need to put a bit more on.

I went and got the rest of the tree today and got three more staves from it. Should had four, but one of the splits didn't come out like planned.

Thanks again for the tips.

@Hov...just get out there bud, if nothing else you keep cabin fever at bay...lol
