Central California Native Staves
« on: January 23, 2011, 10:41:00 AM »
I would like to go out the woods and harvest my own staves locally.  The only problem is here in Santa Cruz (Central CA) I don't know what type of wood/tree to look for.

Could someone let me know what kind of trees in this area are the best for bow staves?

Thanks

Tenbrook

You may have yew, serviceberry, hazelnut, cascara, juniper and a few others.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Pacific Yew grows in California but I don't know how for south?

Lot's of Oaks.

Lot's of Walnut throughout the State.

I don't think there is any yew around here....

There maybe juniper or walnut I'll have to look into that.

Which one of these woods would be best for a selfbow?

You could find Yew in the mountains, that far south it is unlikely though. Near the Sacto area I have found Yew, Black Locust, Osage, and juniper.
You have white oaks also.
