Changed My Riser Design

While working on some new bows I decided to change my riser design a little. This one is just a simple solid riser, the next one will be laminated exotics. I would like your opinion of the distinctive lines mostly. Like/Dislike? Thanks for your comments.

Three-piece take-downs intrigue me, savage. This riser looks sharp and compact. Will you shoot off the shelf, or use an arrow rest of some type? I would like the shelf radiused a little more. Looks good. What are the dimensions?

I really like the riser shape, especially the relief below and in front of the grip. As the others have stated the shelf needs more of an arc if you are going to shoot on the shelf.

It looks real cool with the crisp lines/edges like the grip is a separate piece kind of like a bolt on for an aluminum riser!

Red Hill, its a 19" riser. Its trimmmed down a bit because it will be 1 of 5 youth bows I'm building.

Good call on the radiused shelf, looks like I need to round it a bit more. I'll make another tomorrow and add a curve to the top to match the one on the bottom and add a bit more radius. Thanks for the comments.

I like the overall style, but I would be leary of putting sharp edges and relief cuts on the back. The back is under tremendous tension and any sharp edge creates a weak spot. And I prefer the shelfs cross section to be oval shape, not so square.

the dark line in the wood , in the sight window.
I'm giving it to you for a reference. The most likely place a riser will break is straight across where that dark line is . It begins with compression where the bottom of the grip is and goes through the shelf and breaks right along where that line is.
I speak from experience. if you wish to retain that riser shape with the deepest part of the grip in line with the butt of the limb then you might consider the riser up with some glass in the form of a beauty stripe. Thats the real reason for beauty striping. I am not saying all wood risers will break. What I am saying is that a lot larger percentage of them with your design will unless you break it up. The glass needs to go right through the grip. God Bless, Steve

Sixby, thanks for the tip. Luckily this is a youth bow and will only be 25# draw. Any adult bow I build will have a laminate riser. I can see where that would happen under alot of pressure. I will definately keep that in mind.

I like that design and the relief in the handle area.  With it laminated I think you could make that for high poundage limbs.

I agree with the shelf radius needs to be tighter. try and center the highest part over the deepest part of the grip too..... speaking of the deepest part of the grip....

i think this will be fine for youth bows, but i think you'll need a larger radius where the web of your hand fits into the shelf. that tight of radius is going to be very uncomfortable for most adults. eve a very high wist shooter might get some pinch going on.IMO

I agree with the shelf radius, both on top and on the bottom where your hand contacts it.

It would also be cool if the top of the sight window cut matched the relief line you put in on the bottom section of the riser...

This is my one and only try at a glass recurve. I tried to radius the shelf off from where the arrow rests and then off the front as well for the best fletching clearance.

 

I glued a piece of leather under the shelf leather. This gave a high point directly over the deep part of the grip.

I took everyone's advice, combined it and completely redesigned the riser this morning. I am finish sanding it now and will spray it and take a few pics. I think everyone will like this new design. Thank everyone for your input!
