Maple backed Cherry
« on: February 18, 2011, 08:47:00 AM »
Got a maple backed cherry glued together last night. 68" and 1.5" of reflex glued in. Havent decided on handle wood yet but was thinkin about ERC. Been a while since I've done a backed bow, been kinda stuck on selfbows lately. Never tried maple as a backing before so I'm kinda anxious to see how it holds up.

Never worked with a maple back either. Im not sure how much follow you will have when finished? I would guess 2" or so? Let us know how it comes out for you. I glue 3" in with hickory and oak and end up close to straight when Im done, maybe an 1" of follow.

If it were me I would use some more maple for the handle.  To many woods looks combersome on simple designs IMHO. How do those spring clamps work for you? Home Depo here has some that seem strong for .99 if they work well I am going to invest in about 30 of them this weekend.

I thought about too many different woods and too many different colors too. I probably will end up using maple for the handle. The spring clamps work good for me. I use pressure blocks underneath them to even it out.
Pearl, Ive heard that maple isnt as bad about overpowering lighter woods the way hickory does. Only way to find out is to try it.

Got the front profile shaped and thickness taper lines marked out. Decided to go with another piece of maple for the handle.

Okie looks good. I have thought the same thing about maple and cherrry. the maple shouldnt overpower the cherry, and the maple will take the tension that cherry cant. looking forward to seeing the finished product
