HOW THIN IS TOO THIN on a Recurve??

A friend of mine dropped a bow and gouged it and ended up trying to salvage the limbs for a take-down by additional grinding to the surface and sides of the limbs.

Is there any danger and loss of stability in doing this??  What would you say the minimum width should be for say a 50# set of limbs?

I spoke to the Man yesterday (BOB MORRISON) and he advised that there are quite a few "issues" by going to thin on recurve limbs.

Too many variables to say for sure. It would depend on the design. Photos would help.

i've made a set that came out about 1 1/5" at the fades. seemed ok.  i would think a shorter limb would allow you to go narrower. i think the main issue is stability.

I have limited glass experience, but I would have to say hitting the top and bottom was probably a no-no.If he just sanded the finish off, should be good. If he really hit the glass hard, probably not so good. There really is one way to find out...............Dick Robertson narrows his limb tip width down ALOT to reduce shock and noise, it works. But he may be making up for that is stack thickness, who knows?

On the recurve for my daughter Caroline I had to go down to 1 1/5" because the weight was to high. I was having some issues to keep the limbs straight, but fortunately the draw weight was not very high. I guess with a stronger bow it might get tricky to keep the limbs well aligned.
