Questions about first lam. bow.
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:18:00 AM »
I recently finished my first lam. bow, it's 58" and pulls around 52# @ 28". I built it with the help of a bowyer friend who is great, but he never builds them a 58". I don't want to bother him any more than I have to so here are a few questions for you guys. I have a bit of limb twist, is there a way to address this? Also when you pull the string from tip to tip there's quite a bit of movement in the limbs. A friend said that will make a very fussy bow, but it seems to shoot half way decent ( I have gotten it tuned just yet). It's a 21" riser, .050" and .043 glass, and .05" and .04" white oak parallel lam.s. I quarter sawed the oak. The grain runs pretty parallel with the limbs but it dose fall off to one side, dose that matter so much on a lam. bow? I look forward to your imput. Thanks.

Is this a long bow or perhaps a recurve? If you could do it, a picture of the limb profile may help us here at TG to give you an idea why there is some twist, What for instance is the stack thickness at the ends of the fades? 1 1/2" wide? or maybe 2" down to maybe 3/8s? at the tips? I am not an expert by any means but with that information maybe we can get you further down the road.  Regards

Double check the string notches to make sure they are centered exactly and are rounded nicely in a tear drop shape first thing. if this is still tracking bad after the tips are straightened out, and it's a long bow, you can work the strong side of the working limb down to straighten it out. recurve's are a bit tricky and get squirrelly on you if you get them too narrow.

use a string and eye ball it for dead center through the riser and both limbs like this

Thanks for the responce guys. The stack thickness would be about .183" I guess, but I don't have a micrometer. It is a take down recurve, 1 3/4" at the riser and about 9/16" at the string groves. The top limb is half way decent but the bottom twists to the right when in the shooting position. Kirkll, is that how you normally lay out your take downs? I layed out the limbs, cut them out and sanded, before ever attaching them to the riser. How about the flex in the limbs(from tip to tip when it is not being drawn), are they just too thin? Also, could you recommend any books on bow building. I am interested and have many questions. Like, what is the benefit of having your handle forward, or trapezoid limbs, or tapered lam.s as opposed to parallel? How do you reduce hand shock, etc.? Like I said, many questions. Thanks again guys.
